Rangers fans are constantly left scratching their heads over the impact of Cyriel Dessers on their team’s fortunes.

On the one hand, the 29-year-old striker can find the back of the net and often uses a neat feint and close control to bundle his way through and create chances.

Just as Cyriel Dessers did v Olympiacos.

But the Nigerian international is also prone to missing big chances time and again and Rangers, quite simply, have been unable to rely on the hitman in the big moments.

Just like v Olympiacos.

Now, Cyriel Dessers has courted controversy amongst Rangers fans for comments the ex-Feyenoord man has made about consistently fluffing his lines.

Cyriel Dessers defends Rangers record

Speaking to the Rangers Review come full-time after the 1-1 draw in Greece, Cyriel Dessers was candid about his goalscoring form at Rangers.

Heading into the Scottish Premiership clash with Hearts, Dessers is on a run of seven league games without a goal.

This is something which without a shadow of a doubt contributes to the fact that Rangers have found themselves nine points behind in the title race in recent weeks.

Despite the striker’s real lack of consistency hurting the club, Dessers insists that there is no striker out there who scores every chance that is presented to them.

In comments which have riled a few Rangers supporters, the striker also insists that if he did so, then he wouldn’t be at Ibrox.

“I was watching the Champions League this week and I see unbelievable strikers miss chances,” said Dessers.

“So who am I as Cyriel Dessers to not miss chances.

“Obviously you’re always going to miss more than you score. That’s the life of a striker.

“You know that. There will always be a perception about that but that’s the life.

“If I would score three chances every game then I will probably not be at Rangers either.”

Rangers fans slam ‘embarrassing’ comments

The comments haven’t exactly gone down well amongst Rangers fans, who’ve taken to social media to express their frustrations.

Rangers fans have taken aim at what they perceive to be a lack of high standards at the club and a mentality of accepting failure.

One supporter said Dessers ‘should try’ and score more goals and see if he proves himself right and earns that move.

Another added that ‘no player should be saying this in an interview’ as he took aim at Dessers for accepting mediocrity.

Others have suggested that Dessers is technically ‘right’ in what he says but that there is ‘no excuse’ for the amount of chances Dessers misses.

Another fan simply said that Dessers clearly ‘doesn’t get it at all’ going by the comments made here.

It’s sentiment echoed by plenty of fans:

Cyriel Dessers certainly has everything to prove at Rangers and let’s hope he starts to do so against Hearts at Ibrox.

But will the big striker get the nod against the Jambos?
