Is recalling Greg Docherty the answer to Rangers midfield dilemma?

It’s rare that Rangers will recall one of the players that have been sent out on loan. But in the case of Greg Docherty, should the club make an exception?

The powerful, athletic midfielder’s loan spell at Shrewsbury Town hasn’t just been a success, it’s been massive for both Docherty and the League One outfit.

His energetic, hardworking attitude has been supplemented with actual results on the pitch. This was no more evident than at the weekend.

Greg Docherty played a key role for the Shrews as they overcame Wimbledon 2-1. With the game tied at 1-1, an inspired Docherty effort was parried by the keeper before teammate Luke Waterfall pounced to secure a double, and Shrewsbury’s first win of the season.

Docherty has been vital for Shrews this year

It’s difficult to think were 18th placed Shrewsbury Town would be without Greg Docherty this season.

And with Rangers lacking a player who is willing to take responsibility in the middle, a player who will take the game and ball by the scruff of the neck, Docherty is proving his ability to do just that whilst down South.

The diehard Bluenose has four goals and four assists in 15 matches for the Shrews. He’s a firm fan favourite with the Shropshire Club. Gerrard has also commented before on his progress, meaning this hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Recalling him is definitely an option.

With talk of moves for the likes of Steven Davis and Lewis Macleod in recent weeks, Rangers are clearly on the hunt for a lock picking midfielder.

But they might be better served looking closer to home.
