Rangers have been linked with a move for Academy graduate and former midfielder Lewis Macleod.

The creative midfielder, who’s time at Brentford has been hampered by injury, was linked with a return to Ibrox by the Sun yesterday.

The paper reports that the 24 year old has rejected Brentford’s latest offer of a new deal. This comes after former manager Dean Smith departed for Aston Villa. Both Rangers and Leeds are said to be monitoring his situation.

It’s an interesting proposition. Supporters have been decrying a genuine lack of creative quality and urgency in midfield. That’s despite having nine midfielders.

With McLeod taking a playmaker role on the pitch, could the creative midfielder be the answer to our midfield troubles?

Unfinished business at Ibrox?

You got the feeling that Rangers fans never really got to see the best of Lewis Macleod. He was developing into a fine player and we were gutted to lose him.

An Academy graduate, the midfielder was superb in the undefeated Scottish League One season of 13/14. And in the first half of the season that followed.

He left for £1m the following season as Rangers laboured in the Championship and eventually sold him to Brentford for in January. Macleod was undoubtedly one of the bright sparks of our rather inglorious time in the Scottish lower leagues.

Since being at Brentford he’s suffered major injury problems which have limited his game time over the last three years.

But this season, he’s made 13 appearances in the league and scored two goals.

He’s still young, and is entering the final year of his contract. If the interest is legitimate, can Rangers compete with the top half of the Championship in terms of wages?

That said Macleod could be tempted by a return to the club were he started to make his name.

He may well feel he has unfinished business at Ibrox.
