As the summer window came to an end, many Rangers fans were disappointed that the club didn’t take a risk on 24-year-old striker Lawrence Shankland.

The forward was coming off the back of an unbelievable 34 goal season with Ayr United, albeit in the Scottish Championship.

As a result of his form last season, and with his contract expiring at Somerset Park, both Rangers and Celtic were linked to the player [Daily Star].

But Shankland eventually wound up at Championship promotion hopefuls Dundee United where he has picked up where he left off last season.

The striker has ten in six in Scotland’s second tier and another two goals in the cup competitions. He is the new hope of Dundee United fans, desperate for a change in the Tannadice club’s fortunes.

Despite playing in the second tier of Scottish football, some fans of the national team have even been calling for Shankland to be given a shot with Scotland.

It’s not a bad place for the player to be in.

Shankland’s excellent form continued this weekend with his late brace against Arbroath earning his side a 2-1 win and a vital three points.

With Dundee United top of the Championship, Shankland could be plying his trade in the Premiership next season anyway.

You get the impression that before any move to Rangers beckons – and Shankland is a dyed-in-the-wool Rangers fan – the striker will need to prove his worth on this stage first.

But should Shankland fire the Arabs to the top division and prove to be just as lethal when he gets there, destiny may eventually call for the striker.

It’s not the first time someone has raised the question either.
