‘I’m happy’… Cyriel Dessers on the mark but off target after Rangers struggle to Hearts win

There can’t be many players in a Rangers shirt with the numbers of Cyriel Dessers who drew so much criticism from his own fans.

His third goal in three games was enough to secure all three points against Hearts in what was a 90 minutes that nobody will want to remember.

Philippe Clement’s position as manager remains a shaky one, but he will need Dessers to keep up his current form if he is to have any hope of success at Rangers.

Cyriel Dessers misses the point despite being Rangers winner

The 30-year old striker came under fire for claiming that if he took every chance, he wouldn’t be at Rangers, and his latest interview isn’t much better.

Speaking to Premier Sports after the 1-0 win, Dessers said, when asked about the performance and scoring his 10th goal of the season:

“It’s a valuable three points, we struggled a little bit in the second half. It’s always difficult after a European away game, Thursday, late night game, long flight, but we got the three points and that’s the most important thing.

“Obviously, it’s always nice to score at Ibrox, just to see the ball in the net, I think it was a good moment for us to score to go ahead and, 10 goals, like you say, it’s a nice number, I’m happy to get there already now, but I want more.”

Why Dessers is part of Rangers problem?

The number that is more important, is that Cyriel Dessers scored just his fourth league goal of the campaign, and his first since August against Hearts.

Considering Danilo has been injured for most of that time, it’s easy to see why Rangers have been struggling.

It doesn’t matter how many goals Dessers scores, if he is leading the line and causing problems, but against Hearts, he offered almost no threat or focal point for his teammates.

At 1-0, he had the chance to square a pass to Mohamed Diomande or Connor Barron but chose to shoot with two defenders in front of him, and the chance was lost.

Dessers is almost the perfect representation of what is wrong with Rangers squad just now.

You’re only as good as your last pass at Rangers, and for too many against Hearts, they were going to players in maroon, rather than Light Blue.
