The powerful centre half – who was formerly coached by Pedro Caixinha – has been on solid form in France but his contract is set to expire come to the end of the season.
And did Rennes boss Julien Stéphan just drop a major hint about the player’s future this weekend?

Mexer, 30, was dropped by Stéphan for Rennes’ 2-2 draw with Toulouse this weekend. That’s only a couple of days after it was reported that Steven Gerrard had flown out to have lunch with the Mozambican centre back in France.
The Scottish Sun also claimed Gerrard watched Mexer as Stade Rennais drew 2-2 with Monaco last Wednesday.
Dropping the player is significant given just how important the big defender is to the Rennes side. He’s made 38 appearances for the French outfit this season.
He even got the equaliser which led to Rennes beating PSG on penalties in the French Cup this season.
However, the fact Mexer’s goal forced the tie through extra time might’ve had a bearing on his dropping. Mexer also played 90 minutes against Monaco on Wednesday and may well have been rested as a precaution. But it could also be a hint about any decision over his future.

It wouldn’t be the first time someone has been dropped this season for agreeing to join Rangers.
Pre-contract signing Jordan Jones remains out of the Kilmarnock team whilst another pre-contract signing Jake Hastie is unlikely to feature for Motherwell again this season.
Centre-back Mexer would represent a strong signing by Rangers and it is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks.
