Rangers’ season is all but over aside from a Europa League tie with Fenerbahce on the horizon, not that domestic form is inspiring any hope of the run being extended.

The proposed takeover by the San Francisco 49ers is a welcome distraction and offers a suggestion that the current rut might soon be over, with talks said to be at an advanced stage

A revolution similar to the one when Graeme Souness swept into Ibrox would be welcome and the former Rangers manager is encouraged by talks.

Graeme Souness gives Barry Ferguson verdict as Rangers boss

Speaking at the Shooting Stars charity match to raise funds for Alzheimer Scotland event, Souness also spoke about the appointment of Barry Ferguson, even if he didn’t want to give too much away:

“Listen, that’s not for me to comment on.

“I know Barry, I bought him when I was manager of Blackburn.

“I know he’s a good guy and I know he’s a football man. He knows the football club and I only wish him well.”

What do Rangers need as next manager?

What Souness did as manager was appoint an assistant who he knew could deliver on the training ground and put into practice what he wanted.

That Walter Smith then succeeded him only shows how good a job he was doing.

Rangers have tried both approaches in recent seasons; appointing a figurehead in Steven Gerrard, and a coach in Michael Beale, to varying degrees of success.

They also attempted to find joy with a more traditional manager in Philippe Clement, which didn’t work either.

More than ever, Rangers need to appoint a manager with clear proof of an aggressive style of play

One that is on the front foot and at a high tempo.

The last three managers have all spoken about this, so has Ferguson, however, talk is cheap and the next man in the Ibrox hotseat has to deliver in the same way that Souness did 40 years ago.
