Ex-Chelsea manager ‘attracted’ by Rangers job as pressure builds on Philippe Clement

Philippe Clement is just about holding off the calls from the more frustrated elements of the Rangers support for his head.

But with some huge tests on the horizon, a failure for the Belgian manager to pick up a head of steam could hear those slight murmurs turn into much louder protestations.

Rangers fans are frustrated with the team’s lacklustre performances with Philippe Clement urging patience as his new-look team get used to the expectations of Ibrox.

But now one ex-England international is claiming that should Clement ever get the chop – however unlikely that might be – one former Chelsea manager would jump at the chance to take the reins.

Graham Potter Rangers interest ‘a fact’

Former England international goalkeeper Paul Robinson has been speaking about ex-Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter this week.

Specifically, the former Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers star was speaking about Potter’s potential links to the Rangers managerial job.

Graham Potter’s camp was quick to rule out a potential move to Rangers following the sacking of Michael Beale, just before Rangers plunged for Philippe Clement.

But according to Robinson, he knows ‘for a fact’ that should the job come available again the out of work coach would jump at the opportunity to take over at Ibrox.

“Rangers Football Club is a massive attraction for a manager to take over,” Robinson told Football Insider.

“Managers don’t pick up jobs while teams are doing well. Going into Rangers now with the task to turn them around wouldn’t take a lot.

“There’s absolutely no doubt they can attract a big name like Potter, and he would be attracted by such a huge job. I know that for a fact.

“We’re talking about Glasgow Rangers. They’re one of the biggest and most well-known teams in world football. The following that they’ve got, the stadium they’ve got and the support they’ve got.

“Rangers and Celtic, regardless of the SPFL, are a huge draw all over the world. Absolutely, Rangers can attract a top name. Graham Potter is out of work, those are the type of managers they want to look at.”

Rangers manager committed to Ibrox

Whilst we’ll take Paul Robinson’s claims with a pinch of salt, the suggestion Graham Potter would be interested in the Rangers manager’s gig comes at an interesting juncture for Philippe Clement.

The Rangers manager faced some serious scrutiny after that 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock but has since bounced back with two wins against Steaua Bucharest and St Mirren.

Signing a new contract at the start of the season, Clement was pressed on the conversation surrounding his future and insists he’s here to stay despite all the chatter.

In fact, the Rangers manager claims that signing the new deal on the eve of the new campaign was as much about him reiterating his commitment to Ibrox, as it was about Rangers doing so to him.

“Of course that was the whole idea about the contract,” Clement said only last week.

“From the board, and from me, to show I would not leave if something else came along the way.

“So everybody who did this job and who has worked in football knows to make that rebuild, and cutting wages, and making the club sustainable and investing in young players for now and for the future, it takes time.

“You cannot do that in one, two, three months, it’s impossible.

“Or you need to have all the luck in the world that everybody directly settles in, that there are no injuries, and that in all the games everything falls your way.”
