‘Disgracing our club’ – Rangers fans lose patience with Philippe Clement after Aberdeen defeat

Last night’s game against Aberdeen was billed as the biggest of Rangers’ season and it was hard to argue with that.

The players and manager failed that particular test and the pressure is now piling on Philippe Clement even further.

Furious fans had already started to turn on Clement after defeat to Kilmarnock, so to lose again so soon after will do him no favours.

But how bad is the feeling against the boss right now and does he hold enough support to hold on for now?

Rangers News has taken a look at some of the fan reaction from last night.

Rangers fans’ thoughts on Clement’s future

Losing is always tough to take but when it’s happening so often at a club with the expectations of Rangers, it is magnified to the nth degree.

One defeat in isolation would be bad enough but to go down on the road to Kilmarnock and then again to the Dons so soon after was always going to provoke a reaction from the fanbase.

And when it allows the Pittodrie side to stretch nine points clear and show how to launch a possible title challenge it annoys even further.

Clement was already starting to lose favour with sections of the support and results like last night will just make it worse for him.

One fan said on social media: “I’m all for the long project if there’s little signs of improvement. However when you’re getting worse over time it’s simply unacceptable. He must go.”

Another wrote: “You are disgracing our club. On a good day get a draw? WTAF! Get rid of him. Sort out the boardroom and footballing positions, get a manager that can actually play systems and develop players.”

Another said: “I wasn’t one wanting another manager change, but we can’t keep going like this. We offer absolutely nothing. Dessers is awful, simply awful, and he plays regardless. Give Lovelace a run.”

And another added: “Newsflash, Philippe: As Rangers manager, you don’t get time, you don’t get endless chances to beat Celtic, Aberdeen & Kilmarnock, or work on a “wee project.” You don’t survive without success. Time to go NOW.”

However, the Belgian may still hold some credit in the bank with some supporters after the early signs that he was having an impact on the squad.

One said: I honestly think we need to give Clement time. I know it’s not great but there’s an amazing manager locked in there.”

Another added: “McCausland goal should’ve stood, so at worst we should come away with 2-2, Cerny missing and couple of others on way back we should and can improve, not any sign we’re better than last season so far, still early in season so don’t panic and back the team, still to find real form.”

Ex Rangers stars’ take on Clement

Former Rangers stars turned pundits Kris Boyd and Neil McCann have differing views on the future of the manager.

Boyd reckons it is time for Clement to go as he is not making progress with the team, and the Sky pundit also questioned the Belgian’s excuse about needing time.

Asked that question, he said: “The recruitment from the football club, for a number of years now, is absolutely miles off it. Blame the budget, blame cut backs all you want. There is still money being spent.

Diomande cost over £4million, Jefte £1m, Cortes they need to buy who we’ve hardly seen. Igamane £1.7m – project that one was. Propper £1.5m, Bajrami £3.4m. The list goes on.

“There is no way this can continue at Rangers and somebody needs to get a grip of it.”

While McCann feels the manager WILL be given time while also expressing his own concerns around the whole situation.

He said: “Yes, I think he will. I mean, where are they going to go? I think he will be given time, he’s just been given a new contract.

“He is talking about building for the future. But the future’s now. The Rangers fans might not want him to be given time because nine points behind Aberdeen is unacceptable.”
