Hearts manager Derek McInnes has been linked with the Rangers job in recent years and continues to be in the conversation.

Currently, his focus will be on guiding the Jambos to the Scottish Premiership title, with a draw against Celtic on the final day being enough.

After that, he will assess his future based on the options available, and there could be a vacancy at Rangers if Danny Rohl leaves.

Ally McCoist delivers verdict on Derek McInnes or Steven Gerrard joining Rangers

Ally McCoist believes that a lot of people would want McInnes to return to Rangers, but he does not see that happening.

The talkSPORT pundit believes that McInnes is enjoying the project at Hearts and would not want to abandon that even if they don’t win the league this season.

While the 54-year-old has never managed the Light Blues, he spent five seasons at Ibrox as a player, so he knows the expectations that come with being associated with the club.

Who do you see replacing him?

McCoist does see Steven Gerrard potentially coming back to Rangers should the club be looking for a new manager this summer.

Rohl does seem to have the backing of the board, but after the James Tavernier situation, things could change behind the scenes.

The German may have lost the backing of Emmanuel Fernandez as well, so the owners will need to assess the dressing room before making a decision.

McCoist told talkSPORT: “I could [see Steven Gerrard coming back to Ibrox], yes.

“To be honest, a lot of people will be screaming for Derek McInnes as well, understandably. I’m not sure Derek would return to Rangers now, to be honest. He’s probably enjoying the project at Hearts.

“Although they’re having a fantastic season, they don’t look as though they’re going to get away next year. They look as though they’re going to build and attempt to keep moving forward and progress.

“So he would be another one who would come out of the equation. But Steven Gerrard would obviously tick a lot of boxes with a lot of the Rangers fans.”

Is McInnes the answer to Rangers’ problems?

McInnes would bring much-needed defensive solidity at Rangers, along with an emphasis on wide play.

His teams stretch the opposition through quick transitions and they are usually easy on the eye.

McInnes manages to get the best out of his wingers, so if Mikey Moore does return, he is likely to thrive under his stewardship.

The Scotsman also prioritises making the most out of set pieces, with his Hearts side being extremely effective from dead-ball situations.

While he does not mind ceding possession to the opposition to get the results, his brand of football cannot be described as defensive.

He certainly is more pragmatic than the recent managers Rangers have employed, but perhaps that is what is needed to build a dominating squad.
