Rangers boss Danny Rohl has turned down an offer from a German club this summer, with details of behind-the-scenes talks now coming to light.

Rohl has been the subject of persistent speculation linking him with a return to Germany, with Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg among the clubs credited with an interest in the Light Blues head coach.

He was spotted in Germany on Saturday, watching the Saxony State Cup final between Erzgebirge Aue and his former club Zwickau, fuelling further speculation about his future at Ibrox.

Andrew Cavenagh has publicly backed Rohl to remain at Rangers, but questions have lingered about whether that stance truly reflects the private reality, particularly with Bundesliga interest continuing to swirl in the background.

Rohl declines Dynamo Dresden offer

The offer in question came from Dynamo Dresden, who had proposed a pre-season friendly against Rangers, with the topic making it onto the agenda of the German club’s general meeting following a motion submitted by member Frank Bergmann.

Dresden played their first European match against Rangers back in 1967, and Bergmann’s proposal was designed to mark the occasion with a symbolic reunion between the two clubs.

However, according to Bild, Rohl had to decline the offer to play the match this year.

The German tactician admitted he would have loved to facilitate the game, even floating the idea of a training camp in the Weimar region with friendlies against Dresden and Zwickau.

He, though, had no choice but to reject the proposal, as Rangers are scheduled to return to training on 19 June due to the UEFA Europa League qualifiers, making the schedule too tight to accommodate a trip to Saxony.

Rohl told the German tabloid: “We would have loved to make such a game possible. For example, with a training camp in the Weimar region and then friendly matches in Dresden and at Zwickau – I would have liked to have planned a little tour of eastern Germany for us.

“We’ll start training again on 19 June because we expect to start the Europa League qualifying rounds early. That would be too tight a schedule.”

What it means for Rangers

Rohl is already planning for next season at Ibrox, and that is the most significant detail in this entire story.

A head coach privately considering his exit does not turn down a sentimental homecoming trip on the basis of pre-season scheduling.

Hope remains for a Dresden friendly in 2027, and if it happens, Rohl will still be in the Ibrox dugout.

According to Bild, the chances of the friendly between Rangers and Dresden happening in 2027, 60 years after they locked horns in the European competition, are high.
