There isn’t an obvious choice for who should succeed Philippe Clement and take charge of Rangers with Barry Ferguson the man currently responsible.
The next Rangers manager has a big job on his hands with the San Francisco 49ers takeover likely to play a key role in who gets the job.
Kevin Thelwell’s appointment as sporting director will also be key, given his experience of hiring and firing.
Despite a woeful run of results, Cyriel Dessers has given his verdict on Ferguson keeping his job, with one characteristic in particular giving him and edge.
Ferguson inherited a Rangers squad that everyone knows is inconsistent, but results haven’t improved.

Cyriel Dessers gives Barry Ferguson backing for Rangers job
Goals for and against have also declined towards each other and the chances of Ferguson getting the gig on a permanent basis should be slim.
Dessers, when asked if Ferguson could stay in charge, disagrees:
“Yeah, definitely. I think Barry came in at a very difficult moment for the club,” Dessers said of Ferguson’s chances.
“We were very deep and he kind of got us out of it. He brought some togetherness to the team. He didn’t complicate things too much. Also there, he noticed that we have difficulties with being consistent and performing week in, week out, at home and away. So, it’s not been easy for him, but I think he showed something.
“Yeah, I think that’s a big positive for him,” Dessers said on Ferguson knowing the standards that are needed to succeed at Rangers.
“If there is a decision to be made, he knows the club in and out. He knows the fans, he knows the DNA. He has the DNA of the club inside him. If I look at his speech before the game, you feel the Rangers DNA, and he can transfer that to the group as well. So, I think that’s a big positive for him.”
The other Rangers manager options with Ibrox DNA
The second half of Dessers support for Ferguson is a quality that Thelwell and Rangers should look for, but that doesn’t mean that it should be the Hall of Fame legend that gets the job.
Steven Gerrard is one of the favourites to return to Ibrox despite a poor managerial career after leaving the club to join Aston Villa.
What he does have, is an understanding of the club and what the demands are.
He has also proven that he can win a league title.
On a different level, is Kevin Muscat.
Another who understands Rangers and who has won a title as a player during his short time in Glasgow.
What the Aussie also has though, is a proven, aggressive, attack-minded style of play that he has managed to implement at three different clubs in three different countries to win league championships.
DNA is important, but so is the ability to win games.
