Steven Gerrard: Rangers return makes more sense than ever as 49ers look for a manager who can deliver

The discussion as to whether or not Steven Gerrard should return to Rangers is one that will continue to rage until a new manager is appointed.

There is a lot going on behind the scenes with Kevin Thelwell appointed as sporting director and the San Francisco 49ers securing enough shares to take control of the club.

Add this to a relatively new chairman and CEO and it isn’t the same Rangers that lurched into 2024.

The next appointment should be that of Rangers manager and there continues to be speculation about who will replace Philippe Clement.

Is it the right time for Steven Gerrard to return to Rangers?

His post Ibrox career has not gone according to plan and Gerrard’s reputation has taken a dent

This is one of the reasons why an element of the Rangers support don’t want him back.

There are also questions about whether or not he would want Michael Beale back as his right-hand man.

If Gerrard might be divisive, Beale would be universally unpopular given some of the decisions he made in his time in charge.

Then, there is the record of just one trophy out of nine attempts whilst clubs like St Johnstone got to more finals during the same period and teams like St Mirren knocked Rangers out.

What balances all these things up, is that Gerrard knows how to win a Scottish Premiership title with Rangers.

Why Gerrard is the man Rangers should turn to

With changes to recruitment, changes in the boardroom and how the football club is being run, the last thing it needs is disruption on the pitch.

Gerrard is the safe option, he would bring stability, leadership and the sort of respect that has been lacking in recent years.

There is another bonus, Brendan Rodgers wouldn’t be able to look down his nose at Gerrard, knowing that he has what it takes to challenge for a title.

Unlike in 2018, Auchenhowie is in good shape, as is Ibrox, the medical department and the performance team, Gerrard would be able to concentrate on the football with Thelwell above him taking care of everything else.

Is there a perfect option? No. So, it makes sense to pick the one that ticks the most boxes.

During a time of intense change, that option is Steven Gerrard.
