Rangers’ protracted pursuit of Ryan Kent always threatened to rumble on for the entire summer, and rumble on it certainly has.
Steven Gerrard has never once hidden his desire to get Kent through the door at Ibrox, but there have been plenty of conflicting reports over whether or not that’ll actually happen.
But could the saga reach an unlikely end come the close of the transfer window?
For the last two months, all the talk has been about Kent leaving Liverpool.
Some reports have suggested the Anfield club wanted to shift him permanently this window, whilst others say if they can’t Rangers have the first option on the player [STV].
But is there a chance that Kent could actually remain at Anfield and be a squad player for Liverpool this season?
The winger started Liverpool’s 6-0 friendly demolition of Tranmere Rovers. Albeit because Liverpool’s first-choice attacking talents have been given extended leave after busy summers.
Jurgen Klopp has also been talking down investment in this transfer window, choosing instead to talk up the plethora of young talent Liverpool have at their disposal [Evening Standard].
It suggests the German will be looking at the players currently at the club before splashing out silly money on another player.
The idea that Ryan Kent would be challenging the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Xherdan Shaqiri for a place in the Liverpool side may sound unlikely.
But for a player as talented as Kent is and in the wake of Klopp’s comments, it’s not something that we can completely write off.
