Confusion surrounds extra £700k attached to Rangers transfer fee

There is some confusion around claims that Rangers paid an extra £700k on the fee to sign Antonio Colak from PAOK than previously reported last summer.

The Scottish Sun have been at the forefront of reporting surrounding the Croatian international forward, who looks likely to leave Rangers this summer.

Over the weekend the tabloid had reported that several Bundesliga clubs, headed by Werder Bremen, were looking at German-born Rangers striker Antonio Colak.

They even claimed that Rangers want £2m for the striker, who joined last summer from PAOK after impressing in a Champions League qualifier against the Gers with Malmo the season before.

But interestingly, whilst some might have believed this would make Rangers a small £200k profit on the striker, the Sun believe that the Ibrox side are actually preparing for a £500k loss.

Reports last summer from the likes of Sky Sports suggested Rangers paid £1.8m to sign Antonio Colak from PAOK but the Scottish Sun has now reported not once, but twice, that the fee was actually £2.5m.

The tabloid has released another report suggesting that Italian Serie B pair Parma and Pisa are both interested in the striker to the tune of £2m.

Are Rangers cutting yet more losses with Antonio Colak fee?

With Michael Beale reportedly needing this cash injection to fund the next part of his summer rebuild, and potentially a move for Feyenoord striker Danilo, the details here are perhaps important.

Rangers have only in the last few windows began to overturn their issues with player trading out of the club – said to be the fourth pillar of Ibrox investment – which still appears to be substantially behind Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Shipping out Nathan Patterson (£16m) and Calvin Bassey (£23m) stand out as the benchmarks for the club but other than Joe Aribo, Rangers have failed to set up a functional trading model which consistently brings home the bacon.

The release of Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent at the end of their contracts represents a huge failure of squad management which is hurting the club financially.

Symbolically, if Rangers are set to make yet another loss in their squad, this time on Antonio Colak, it represents a step sideways in terms of player trading, or even backwards, and fans have been left scratching their heads.

We’re sure all will become clear if Antonio Colak is eventually shipped out this summer, but there is a big difference between a £500k loss and £200k profit, and for a stuttering Rangers in this department, it’s not just about the figures involved.
