When Barry Ferguson came into Rangers, it was all about restoring the club’s values to a squad who didn’t quite understand what it means to play at Ibrox.

A disastrous season ended in tears on Thursday night, as Athletic Club got the rub of the green to progress against Rangers into the Europa League semi-finals.

Before Barry Ferguson came on board, Rangers had already crashed out of all three domestic competitions but such has been his impact, James Tavernier reckons Barry should be involved at the club next season.

Now, there’s shades of Rangers south of the border as Cardiff City appoint former Ibrox midfielder Aaron Ramsey until the end of the season.

Cardiff City appoint ex-Rangers midfielder Aaron Ramsey

Cardiff City have appointed Aaron Ramsey as interim manager until the end of the season after sacking Omer Riza.

With the club languishing in 23rd place in the Championship table, Cardiff have five games left to stave off relegation to League One.

Three points adrift of safety, there is still everything to fight for and boyhood fan Aaron Ramsey, who returned to the Bluebirds in 2023, is now tasked with salvaging the club’s season.

Ramsey, 34, spent six months on loan at Rangers back in 2022 and infamously missed the decisive penalty kick in the Europa League Final defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Rangers fans know all too well that feeling of turmoil and speaking ahead of this Easter weekend’s visit of Oxford United, Ramsey was in buoyant mood.

Ramsey will be joined in the dugout by Joe Ralls, Chris Gunter, Gavin Ward, Matthew Bloxham and Tom Hutton, a dream team of Cardiff-minded professionals similar to that brought in by Ferguson at Rangers.

Aaron Ramsey believes his backroom staff will be crucial to turning Cardiff’s season around as he looks to follow in Ferguson’s footsteps at Rangers and bring a sense of pride back to the club.

“It’s massively important,” Ramsey told the Cardiff website when asked about his backroom staff’s affiliations.

”They understand the Club, they’re fans of the Club, and I think that will really relay into the players, for them to realise the responsibility that we have as a group of players and staff. There’s people there that really care, and I want that to be implemented around the team.

“The fans are huge for us. I’m really looking forward to seeing our fans getting right behind the team and playing their part. They’ve been really patient with us this season, and I thank them for that.

“Hopefully now in this last three games, starting on Monday, they can get right behind us and help us get over the line. I know what it’s like to be a Cardiff fan, and I can relate to them. Please get behind this team now, because we’ll give you everything on Monday and for the remaining two games.

“It’s all about togetherness and sticking by each other now. We need to get out of the situation we’re in, there’s no two ways about that. Hopefully we’ll have something to celebrate at the end of the season.”
