Barry Ferguson urges Rangers to cash in on high-earner and ‘claw back’ transfer fee

Rangers’ need to cut their cloth in recent years has been well documented.

In most of the recent windows it has seemed like it has been a case of getting some fringe men or high earners before bringing anybody new in.

And Philippe Clement has often made reference to the finances or a need to sell before buying.

Most recently, in the closing stages of the January window, Clement admitted signings were necessary but he would need to wait and see because it is the board who must decide if money is made available.

Of course, no further additions were secured as Rangers finished the January transfer window with just one signing.

The club may be in a better position to strengthen in the summer with Europa League money factored in and also a chance to bring in some transfer fees.

One such deal could be the permanent transfer of Rabbi Matondo.

Ferguson hopes Rangers cash in on Rabbi Matondo

Matondo completed a loan move out of Rangers to Hanover towards the end of the January window.

The Bundesliga side hold an option to buy the winger outright for £1million, which would be a £2m loss for Gers after paying £3m to sign him from Schalke 04.

But Barry Ferguson still thinks it would be good business for Rangers to bring in a transfer fee and get Matondo off the wage bill at the same time

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, he said:  “I think it was best for both parties. [Matondo] wasn’t really involved. His career has been biting with injuries.

“I believe he was a high-earner as well.

“He’ll go over there on loan until the end of the season and if he impresses, Rangers can obviously try and claw back a bit of the transfer fee they paid.

“If he does well, they can hopefully cash in on him.”

Matondo’s dream Hanover start and Rangers claim

The Welshman got his second spell in German football off to a brilliant start with a superb solo goal in a 2-2 draw against Hamburg.

Matondo went on to claim obstacles were in his way at Rangers in a cryptic social media post.

While Hannover boss Andre Breitenreiter was full of praise for Matondo and insisted he got off to a ‘near perfect’ start.
