Philippe Clement has urged the Rangers board to go out and strengthen the club’s squad before the January window slams shut at Ibrox.
Rangers have banked north of £9m from the club’s Europa League run this season and Philippe Clement is eager for reinforcements before Monday’s deadline.
The Rangers boss has also suggested that the exits of several high profile players this January have freed up wages to go and sign replacements.
Philippe Clement says new transfers ‘necessary’
The Rangers manager was speaking to Sky Sports about the transfer state of play at Ibrox and admitted there are areas of the squad that he’d like to improve.
But the Philippe Clement spun the conversation back on the Rangers board who sign the cheques when it comes to any incomings and outgoings.
Clement is clear that he believes new additions are ‘necessary’ and the Rangers boss has urged the club to ‘make the next step’.
”I think it’s necessary to make a next step with the squad in certain positions,” said Clement.
”We will see how far we will get because at the end it’s the board who decides what money can be spent and where.”
Ranger free up wages for replacements
Rangers have sanctioned a number of exits this January with no fewer than five first-team stars leaving the club.
Only Alex Lowry (Wycombe Wanderers) has left the club permanently but Kieran Dowell (Birmingham City) and Rabbi Matondo (Hannover96) will hope to win permanent exits this summer.
Rangers have also sanctioned loan deals for promoted academy talents Robbie Fraser (Livingston) and Cole McKinnon (Ayr United).
Philippe Clement was asked if Rangers fans should expect any more outgoings with the likes of Tom Lawrence strongly linked to the exit door.
The Rangers manager insists anything can happen heading into the deadline before hinting that exits have freed up wages for ‘replacements’.
”Not much more,” said Clement when asked about players leaving. “It can be that still people leave.
”And Kieran and Rabbi were not playing much and had good wages.
”Contracts out of the past, not the same contracts that the club can give anymore to new players.
”So that’s also one of the reasons that they could go and that they could be replaced by younger players or new players that could step into the building.
”That’s the way Rangers need to go for the moment.”
