Barry Ferguson admits he got it wrong about Emmanuel Fernandez at Rangers

Barry Ferguson has been pleased by what he has seen from Emmanuel Fernandez at Rangers.

Fernandez moved to Ibrox to very little fanfare in the summer, but quickly emerged as one of the club’s most important players.

The centre-back is now among the first names on the team sheet for Danny Rohl’s side, and is already linked with a move to the Premier League.

Barry Ferguson believes Emmanuel Fernandez gets better with each game

Barry Ferguson admits that he was not sure the centre-back would be able to cut it at Ibrox when he joined from Peterborough.

Rangers paid £3m+ for Fernandez, and at the time, it looked like a steep fee for a relative unknown.

The Gers had been dealing with defensive issues for years, and a number of fans, including Ferguson, were unconvinced.

However, the former Rangers boss believes that he has improved game after game and has returned to the basics, which has benefited him as well as the team.

He told Five Stars VIP: “I’ll be honest with you. At the start, I wasn’t too sure, but then again, he’s [Fernandez] not played a lot of football.

It’s a new environment, and I just think each game that’s passed by, he’s getting better and better and stronger and stronger and I think he’s went back to a bit of basics as well.

“He’s not taking as many chances. I think that’s helping them.”

How Rangers are likely to convince Fernandez to stay in the summer

It will undoubtedly be hard for the Gers to resist offers if clubs offer big money for Fernandez this summer.

However, as he is only 24, they could argue that he could be worth more 12 months later and guarantee that they will let him go at the pre-determined fee.

This would give them a whole year to get the best out of him while also preparing for a replacement in case he does end up leaving.

Winning the league would make things easier as it would be a step closer to Champions League qualification, something that would be worth staying on for.
