After Phil Jagielka was spotted in Glasgow, reports were quick to rubbish any Rangers move for the player [Football Scotland].
The defender was apparently just in Glasgow to socialise. The fact the 36-year-old has just been released from Everton is said to be merely a coincidence.
It’s also not the first time a move to Ibrox has been rubbished in the press. A Football Insider link to the player was shot down last month [Scottish Sun].

But should Rangers have chosen to move for the 40-times capped former England international, it wouldn’t actually have been a terrible decision.
Jagielka may be in his mid-30s, but he’s a solid, dependable option at centre half. Rangers, with Gareth McAuley’s future in the balance, also lack an experienced head in the position.

With the club looking to sign another centre back, they may well go for someone with experience. Jagielka has that in spades.
Being a free agent, Jagielka would also be a cost-effective option for the Glasgow side.
But perhaps Rangers have their sights set on investing in the area. The likes of Welsh international James Lawrence have been linked with a £3m move [Daily Record].

Whatever the case, Rangers will surely be on the hunt for another central defender.
And whilst it might not be many a fan’s first choice, a Phil Jagielka type wouldn’t be a terrible one. At least in the short-term.
