Antonio Colak heads Rangers trio linked with Ibrox exit to “free up funds”

Rangers trio Antonio Colak, Scott Wright and Jon McLaughlin could soon head for the Ibrox exit door in order to free up funds and space for a summer rebuild.

That’s according to the Daily Record and journalist Scott Burns, who claim that the Ibrox fringe players’ futures hang in the balance heading into a crucial transfer window.

It’s not the first time Antonio Colak – who only joined Rangers from PAOK last summer – has been linked with the exit as major doubts surround the striking position at the club.

While the Croatian international has managed 17 goals this season – including the strike that took Rangers to the Champions League group stages – there are doubts about his ability to lead the line for the club.

Rangers, quite simply, do not score enough goals and, with Alfredo Morelos edging closer to an exit, and Kemar Roofe still sidelined with injury, expect investment at the top end of the pitch.

With reports that Colak could be about to exit the club, it suggests Rangers will have an entirely new-look striker set-up next season.

Antonio Colak not the only Rangers player linked with Ibrox exit

Scott Wright is another player being linked with an exit and the former Aberdeen winger has failed to really grasp his chances when given then at Rangers.

A tactically disciplined player who has been given a chance by previous managers, and someone who also adds to that much-discussed homegrown UEFA quota, there is an argument to keep the attacker around.

But the reality is that, in the chances Wright has had, the odd flash of talent aside, he hasn’t shown the required consistency to be a match-winning attacker for Rangers. The fact he’s a squad player sums up why the club is lagging behind Celtic.

If Wright is to stick around, he needs to produce more goals, assists and match-winning moments. Yet the body of evidence that is his Rangers career suggests he’s not capable of doing so. In 83 games Wright has scored eight goals and laid on seven assists.

Change at both ends of the park

Jon McLaughlin was handed an opportunity to make the number one spot his own at Rangers at the beginning of the season but fluffed his lines in the face of Premiership pressure.

Shipping eight goals in two games against Celtic and Ajax had the writing on the wall, with an injury taking him out of the team and Allan McGregor regaining the spot.

With Robby McCrorie confidently emerging at Rangers, and Jack Butland reportedly close to signing, there appears to be no place for the Scotland international who has provided solid back-up even if he was unconvincing as the main man.

There have been no bones made about the rebuilding job set to take place at Rangers this summer and there will be collateral damage as the tectonic plates shift under Ibrox.

Celtic’s imminent fifth treble in seven seasons had made the support wince for one final time and the axe has already begun to swing in the Rangers boardroom.

Now it’s set to tear through the squad, with those who have been given plenty of chances, but failed to take them, prepared to fall victim as Michael Beale looks towards a rebuild.
