Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh has been called out for not making the most of the uncertainties at Celtic.

There were big doubts over Danny Rohl’s future as the Rangers boss when the 2025-26 season came to a close, with the team’s performances in the last few weeks of the campaign reducing his popularity among fans.

However, Cavenagh was quick to quash any suggestions that the Light Blues would fire the German tactician, extending his support to the head coach publicly immediately after the season.

Cavenagh and Rohl appear to be on the same page, as they oversee yet another squad overhaul at Ibrox this summer.

Gary Keown calls out Cavenagh over Rohl decision

While Rangers have since given fans a cause for excitement by roping in Lawrence Shankland on a free transfer from Hearts, doubts over Rohl remain in some quarters.

Gary Keown is among those who are still sceptical of Cavenagh‘s decision to back the former Sheffield Wednesday boss, especially amid major uncertainties at Celtic.

The journalist cannot believe that the Celtic hierarchy did not anticipate opposition towards the potential appointment of Robbie Keane due to his connection to Maccabi Tel Aviv.

He also hit out at the Hoops for the poor handling of their manager hunt, but reserved similar criticism for Rangers, too.

In his view, Celtic’s situation should provide a boost to the Gers’ hopes of usurping their Old Firm rivals, but Cavenagh has put them behind the eight-ball even before the season has started by backing Rohl.

Writing in the Daily Mail, he noted: “As it is, the temporary truce that took Celtic to the league and cup is over, and it looks like nothing has moved on.

“That should give Rangers hope, but chairman Andrew Cavenagh is sticking with Danny Rohl, and that looks like putting them behind the eight-ball from the off.

“As for Hearts? It will be fascinating to watch what happens there.”

Rangers must pay no heed to outside talk

Cavenagh has taken a calculated risk by giving Rohl the opportunity to lead the team into the 2026-27 season.

While the German left much to be desired in the post-split fixtures, Rangers’ results prior to that suggest that he has what it takes to mount a genuine title challenge in the Premiership.

In Cavenagh’s own words, the 37-year-old offers the Ibrox club the best chance of emerging triumphant next season.

The Gers chairman is currently focused on giving Rohl the best players needed to achieve that goal, and then the onus will be on the head coach to deliver.
