Adored Rangers star says it would be a 'dream' to finish his career at Ibrox

Rangers star Steven Davis says it would be a “dream” for him to finish his career at Ibrox [Belfast Telegraph].

Davis won eight major honours as a Ger between 2008 and 2012 and returned to the club, initially on loan, in January 2019 following a seven-year stint with Southampton.

It took the midfield maestro a while to settle in again but he’s been superb for the past two seasons and his key role in delivering 55 cemented his status as an Ibrox hero.

The extremely popular 36-year-old has since signed a one-year contract extension and although he doesn’t know how much longer he’ll be playing for, he does know that he wants to finish his career in Glasgow.

“You have to see how your body feels and mentally as well if you still have that desire – I certainly still have that at this moment in time but it is very difficult to plan ahead,” he said [Belfast Telegraph]. “It would be a dream if I was able to stay at this level until I finish playing and finish my career at the club on a high. That would be a great scenario for me personally if that was the case.”

“I feel we are on the right track and I want to be part of that. This season, on a personal level, I have felt good physically and I think I have learnt from the best in people like (former Northern Ireland team-mates) Gareth McAuley and Aaron Hughes, that once you get to this stage of your career you don’t look too far ahead.

“That was my approach going into this season, to try and embrace and enjoy it as much as I could because you don’t know how long you have left. My body still feels good and I’m delighted to sign another year and we will re-assess things next season.”

These comments will be music to the ears of Rangers fans.

Davis’ age suggests the end may be nigh but his performances tell a different story, with the veteran still running games not just in the Premiership but also in Europe and at international level.

He’ll no doubt be excited by the potential to play Champions League football again at Ibrox next season and he’ll be a key figure in the Gers’ title defence.

In other news, Rangers have reportedly registered interest in an in-form Premier League player.
