Barry Ferguson is the man in charge of Rangers for now with a permanent appointment being lined up for the summer.

Speculation has been surprisingly quiet, although the usual suspects like Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat continue to be mentioned as possible contenders to sit in the Ibrox hotseat next.

Another name has been added to the list of those in the conversation to be Rangers manager with Hall of Fame legend Ally McCoist considering an experienced operator.

Ally McCoist reacts to Rafa Benitez to Rangers question

The Gers great was joined by co-host Jeff Stelling on the Talksport breakfast show on Monday the 3rd of March, who said:

“He’s got loads of experience, he’s got European experience, top level experience, and he is available,” Stelling said of a fan phoning in and suggesting Rafa Benitez, McCoist in reply agreed, but on one condition:

“Absolutely. I wouldn’t have a problem with it. The only thing he would need, the same as (Ruben) Amorim at Man Utd, is a better squad of players to deal with at this moment of time.”

McCoist is right. The defeat at home to Motherwell is all the evidence that is needed regarding the current Rangers squad

Is Benitez the right man for Rangers?

Barry Ferguson hasn’t changed much, but then he, alongside Neil McCann, could be seen for almost the full game going berserk at their players for some of their decision making and passing against Motherwell.

Almost like it hasn’t entirely been down to the manager being inept.

Benitez is hugely experienced, is a Champions League winner and has coped with the pressure of some of the biggest clubs in the world, however, he is a pragmatist in the mould of Giovanni van Bronckhorst or Philippe Clement.

In short, the exact opposite of what Rangers need after years of the same system and style of play falling woefully short when it comes to winning silverware.
