‘I felt’… 20-year-old Rangers starlet admits meeting with his new teammates was terrifying

One Rangers loanee has admitted how ‘nerve-wracking’ it was to leave the club in January.

Philippe Clement and director of football Nils Koppen navigated their way through the winter transfer window successfully and brought in three players to strengthen the first-team squad.

It also provided a chance for him to offload a number of players, one of those being Dutchman Sam Lammers who has failed to convince his manager or the Rangers fans since making a £3.5m move to Ibrox in the summer.

Ben Williamson was sold to Hamilton Academical and a plethora of youngsters were sent out on loan to get much-needed game time for the rest of the season.

One of those was 20-year-old full-back Adam Devine who was signed by Motherwell after Clement gave him the green light to leave.

As per Transfermarkt, Devine failed to make a single Scottish Premiership appearance for Rangers this term as the immovable club captain James Tavernier stands in his way at right-back.

His only first-team minutes came against Morton in the Viaplay Cup last 16 win so Devine – whose contract runs out in the summer – was very keen to get out on loan in January.

The Glasgow native has been at Rangers since a young kid and his only other loan stints were with Partick Thistle and Brechin City.

So when the Motherwell deal was signed, sealed and delivered, an unconfident Devine admits he was nervous before meeting his new teammates at Fir Park.

Adam Devine on Rangers loan exit

Discussing his switch to Lanarkshire, the Gers youngster told the Daily Record: “The loan came in the last two days when the manager gave me the green light to go out on loan. I was looking forward to it because it was a new challenge, something different.

“Rangers is all I’ve known in my life so it was nerve-wracking to meet the squad which I’d never done before. I felt with the way this season had gone, I wasn’t at my best in training, I was low in confidence and I felt I needed more game time.

“As a kid that’s where you feel at your best and I felt going on loan was the best opportunity to show myself again. I played Scotland under-21 games then the B team program was different this year because they weren’t in the Lowland league, so it was just random games every month or two.

“I’ve not played a lot of football, it’s just been training every day and trying to keep myself fit so I can go out and show what I can do.”

Strong Motherwell start for Devine

Adam Devine has played three times for Motherwell and already has a goal and assist to his name, netting in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Aberdeen in midweek.

He realises chances were going to be at a premium at Rangers with Tavernier in front of him but now he’s just eager to show what he’s capable of at Motherwell.

Devine continued: “It’s difficult but it’s always going to be difficult when you’re at Rangers and you have James Tavernier in front of you. He’s an unbelievable player, unbelievable person, club captain, but as a young player you just want to go out and play as much as you can.

“The manager said just to go and enjoy it, play games, and show what I’ve been showing recently at Rangers. He said to take it in my stride, attack and defend as well as I could, and help the team win.

“First start for Motherwell and it was good to get off the mark with the goal. That’s what you want to do – I came out on loan to get game time and show people what I can do. I’ve not played in a long time so I’m still finding my feet. I’m getting close to where I want to be but there’s still a lot of improvement.”
