Rangers v Lyon past meetings

Rangers have faced Lyon on four occasions in the past, twice in the Champions League and twice in the Europa League.

Rangers have never beaten Lyon at Ibrox but remain unbeaten against the French side away from home.

The Gers faced Lyon in the 07/08 Champions League group stages, with Karim Benzema scoring twice in a 3-0 defeat at home.

Rangers famously defeat Lyon 3-0 in France during this campaign, with goals from Lee McCulloch, Daniel Cousin and DaMarcus Beasley coming on a famous night.

Rangers then faced Lyon in the 21/22 Europa League group stages, losing 2-0 at Ibrox with Scott Wright scoring in a 1-1 draw with the French side in Lyon.

In a positive omen, every time the Ibrox side have faced Lyon in a competitive game the Gers have reached the Europa League Final, in 2008 in Manchester and in 2022 in Seville.

Rangers also played Lyon in a pre-season friendly tournament back in 2020, with the Gers lifting the Trophee Veolia after defeating the Ligue 1 side 2-0.

Rangers team news v Lyon

Rangers know they will face a talented Lyon side at Ibrox and Philippe Clement has provided an update on the club’s squad heading into the match.

Confirming that Mohamed Diomande will be involved against the French outfit, Clement claims that the game has come too soon for the returning Ridvan Yilmaz.

Rangers pair Danilo and Rabbi Matondo are not included in the club’s Europa League squad, with Oscar Cortes still facing some weeks on the sidelines.

Rangers v Lyon referee & VAR

The refereeing team for Rangers’ Europa League clash with Lyon at Ibrox will be mostly made up of German officials, although there is one Spanish referee.

Young German whistler Sven Jablonski is the main referee for the game and takes charge of a Rangers match for the first time.

Jablonski was in charge during Hearts’ 1-0 second leg Europa League playoff defeat to Viktoria Plzen earlier in the summer.

The referee is joined by fellow German officials Eduard Beitinger and Sascha Thielert, who will be the match’s two refereeing assistants.

Tobias Reichel is the fourth official.

Benjamin Brand is on VAR duties with Spanish official Carlos del Cerro Grande the German’s assistant.
