Rangers player ratings vs Motherwell: 3/10 flop should be dropped with 8/10 trio a level above

Rangers domestic form away from home has been shocking this season and, in any other situation, probably enough to get Philippe Clement the sack.

The manager knows that he is underperforming alongside a squad that it can get results and put in decent performances – just not anywhere away from Ibrox it would seem.

Here are your Rangers player ratings for the trip to Hampden to face Motherwell.

Rangers player ratings vs Motherwell

With a place in the Premier Sports Cup final secured, this is how the Rangers players scored:

Jack Butland – 5

Had nothing to do until he had to pick out Andy Halliday’s opening goal out from the net, with question marks about whether or not he should have came for the cross that landed inside the six-yard box.

James Tavernier – 3

Continuously gave the ball away, missed a near open goal from six-yards out and his set-piece deliveries rarely made it past the first man.

When the did, they went out for goal kicks, deservedly substituted after 65 minutes for Dujon Sterling, who should replace him from the start in the next line-up.

Jefte – 4

Back into the team after being rested against Aberdeen and the Brazilian was still half asleep when he was called into action to defend for the first time as he inexplicable turned his back on Halliday – Rangers fans were far from happy with the 20-year old.

Forced a fine save with a well-struck volley and, at least, seemed intent on making up for his earlier blunder.

Leon Balogun – 5

With most of the possession being Rangers’, Balogun’s biggest job was helping to build play out from the back.

Dealt with what was thrown at him but could have moved the ball quicker.

John Souttar – 5

Busier in the second half, Souttar looked to dribble out from the back but was frustrated to see teammates go back the way rather than playing at the same intensity.

Nicolas Raskin – 8

Again, Rangers best outfield player and embarrassing a few of his senior teammates in terms of work rate and desire to make something happen.

Connor Barron – 7

As with Raskin, never stopped running and looking to get Rangers on the front foot if not the same quality in possession as Raskin.

Nedim Bajrami – 8

Finally, a Rangers forward who wants to get in behind the opposition defence, it’s just a shame that his colleagues can’t score from six-yards out.

The player in Light Blue most likely to make something happen alongside Vaclav Cerny.

Got away with a heavy first touch to score Rangers second but his run and positioning deserved the reward.

Tom Lawrence – 2

An absolute non-event of a performance before going off injured. His best involvement was for Motherwell as he tackled Connor Barron looking to get a shot away.

Cyriel Dessers – 4

The game should have been out of sight in the first half if Dessers had shown more composure with his finishing and his passing.

Scored a good goal to get Rangers level, but it should have been to put the game to bed.

The goal can’t/won’t mask what was an awful display.

Vaclav Cerny – 8

Rangers most dangerous player in possession and deserved to get on the score sheet.

Caused Motherwell problems all afternoon going outside onto his right or cutting inside, just couldn’t get the break of ball needed.

Provided the killer pass for Bajrami to put Rangers in front with a moment of composure few others could provide.

Substitutes

Dujon Sterling – 6

Replaced Tavernier after 65 minutes and his first involvement showed the athleticism that the skipper no longer possesses with an overlapping run beyond Cerny.

Danilo – 6

Busier than Dessers as he looked to get the winning goal and stake his claim for a starting role.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo – 6

On at centre-half for the ageing Balogun with his pace a useful addition to the defence as space opened up.

Mohamed Diomande – 7

Offered more in possession than Lawrence and his switch of play to Cerny for Rangers second typified this.

Good vision, well executed and hopefully the confidence boost that the 23-year old needs.
