‘That is an absolute sitter’… Cyriel Dessers slaughtered as Rangers striker has Motherwell nightmare

Rangers defending for Motherwell’s opening goal is the sort of thing that not even the great Pep Guardiola could do anything about if he replaced Philippe Clement.

Where the manager could do himself a favour though, is stop picking players who are consistently offering nothing and, if anything, only making matters worse for their squad teammates.

With a clear one v one chance from inside the box and a rebound with the goal gaping, Cyriel Dessers is as much at fault for Rangers woes at Hampden as those at the other end of the park.

Cyriel Dessers missers sitter to create more problems for Rangers

Not only did he butcher two chances, but the Nigerian international squandered a 2 v 1 opportunity with 30 yards of space to play in Nedim Bajrami, instead, only finding the Motherwell defender.

As at Pittodrie though, it was Dessers’ ineptitude that saw Rangers go in 1-0 down instead of level.

On commentary duty for Premier Sports, Michael Stewart was less than impressed with Dessers’ attempt shortly before the break:

“My initial reaction is, ‘that’s a goal,’ as you see the chance coming out to him but that’s another chance that goes a-begging,” proclaimed Stewart.

“I mean, that’s a sitter, that is an absolute sitter.

“It comes out to him, the goal is at his mercy.”

The Premier Sports cameras then cut to the crowd with Stewart summing up the mood in the Rangers support:

“You can see what the supporters think about it,” as fans stood in shock shaking their heads.

Dessers continues to create more problems than he solves

Dessers has become a massive problem for Clement. No goals in eight games with performances that are offering nothing in terms of work rate or link up play with teammates either.

That Dessers was booed by some sections of Rangers support as he came back onto the pitch after the incident says it all about current opinion.

Rangers can’t keep conceding soft goals if their No.9 is missing sitters too.

The sight of Danilo on the bench is a welcome one, the return of Dessers after half-time wasn’t – until he scored in the 50th minute, in the most typically Dessers of moments.
