Rangers interview four candidates for Director of Football role

Rangers have failed to find a “good fit” for the Director of Football position after the exit of Ross Wilson and before the sacking of Michael Beale.

That’s according to the Sunday Times, who claim the Ibrox club interviewed four options following Ross Wilson’s move to Nottingham Forest in April.

However, all four failed to convinced Ibrox chiefs or outgoing Rangers manager Michael Beale, who apparently “insisted” on taking charge of recruitment this summer.

It’s a situation which has come back to bite both Rangers and Michael Beale significantly after a disastrous start to the Scottish Premiership season.

Michael Beale’s summer recruitment has been brought under serious scrutiny after a failure to qualify for the Champions League and falling seven points behind Celtic in the title race.

It’s also one of the main reasons why Rangers are now looking for a new manager and the outgoing Ibrox gaffer has been sacked from his role at the club.

Rangers fail to plug Director of Football gap

Rangers are now in a situation where they don’t have any continuity behind the scenes at Ibrox after a summer of upheaval on the pitch and in the boardroom.

The concept of a Director of Football allows clubs to maintain a strong vision and identity on and off the pitch even as players and management teams are rotated through the clubs.

This is the model that Rangers have previously committed to but now find themselves without and fans will ask which four candidates were interviewed for the Director of Football role.

Names who were prominently mentioned include ex-Rangers defender and Atalanta United Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra, who distanced himself from the role.

Another former Rangers star in ex-Germany midfielder Christian Nerlinger was also mentioned whilst former Arsenal chief Steve Morrow was another name doing the rounds.

Rangers legend Graeme Souness was also strongly linked with a return to Ibrox but for whatever reason, a move did not materialise.
