Former Arsenal man profiled as Rangers appointment considered

Rangers are now considering a move to appoint former Arsenal man Steve Morrow as their new sporting director.

That is according to The Athletic, who report that Morrow is now one of the candidates for the Ibrox job.

Ross Wilson rocked Rangers by leaving the club in April, completing a quickfire move to become chief football officer at Nottingham Forest.

Michael Beale wanted to go into the summer transfer window without a replacement, instead believing that most of the work had already been done and he could get deals over the line himself.

Rangers will ultimately want a replacement moving forward though and we’re starting to see rumours about candidates.

Former Gers defender Carlos Bocanegra has already been spoken to but has decided to reject a return to Ibrox.

That means other contenders are emerging and Morrow is one of them, with the ex-Arsenal man now under consideration for a move to Glasgow.

Headhunting firm Executives in Sport are working to identify potential appointments for Rangers and Morrow is one of the suggestions.

Rangers aren’t expecting to make an appointment soon and Morrow – or anybody else – would likely come in with the idea of impacting 2024 transfer windows and beyond.

Who is Rangers target Steve Morrow?

Morrow was born in Belfast and started his playing career with Bagnor before being lured to Arsenal as a teenager.

A defender or midfielder back then, Morrow became a cult hero after scoring a winner against Sheffield Wednesday in the 1993 League Cup final.

In the post-match celebrations, Morrow broke his arm as Tony Adams picked him up and awkwardly dropped him.

Morrow went onto become a regular for Queens Park Rangers before spells with Peterborough United and Dallas Burn.

Morrow turned to coaching with Dallas Burn and then as the rebranded FC Dallas, eventually becoming their manager in 2006.

After being sacked in 2008, Morrow was brought back to Arsenal, overseeing relationships between Arsenal and their associated clubs.

Morrow stepped up to become Arsenal’s head of youth development in 2014, helping bring thorough the likes of Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka.

A reshuffle at the Emirates Stadium meant Morrow left the club in 2019 and he has most recently been working as a scout in the England setup.

The Telegraph spoke to Morrow earlier this year and highlighted that he was considering moving into a technical director role.

That kind of position could be on offer at Rangers, with Morrow potentially coming in to replace Wilson at Ibrox.
