Former Ibrox director Carlos Bocanegra will not be returning to Rangers after ruling himself out of the running for the vacant sporting director role.

According to the Athletic, whilst Rangers interviewed Carlos Bocanegra for the job, the 110-cap former USA international will not be taking up any job at Ibrox.

It comes with the Gers looking to fill the vacant role left by the departure of former director Ross Wilson, who left for Nottingham Forest earlier in the season amid protests over his transfer record.

Carlos Bocanegra has been the technical director of Atlanta United since 2015 and was appointed vice president of the MLS club in 2017, overseeing some success with a cup double in 2018.

After signing a contract extension with the American club in 2021, it appears Bocanegra’s loyalties lie in the USA and whilst there is no suggestion Rangers offered him the job, the Ibrox side will now look elsewhere.

The centre-back had a two year stint at Rangers between 2011 and 2013 which was interrupted by the club’s painful financial issues which saw the Gers relegated to the bottom tier of Scottish football.

Despite initially announcing his intentions to represent the club on their journey back up the tiers of the Scottish game, an interruption in his USA playing career saw the defender move to Racing Santander in 2012.

The centre-back would then move on Chivas in Mexico the following season.

Rangers are also said to have interviewed former midfielder Christian Nerlinger for the job, the German having served in a similar position at Bayern Munich.

Former Ibrox captain Craig Moore has also previously hinted at his interest in the position, with Rangers hiring an agency to headhunt for an appropriate name to fill the role.

Rangers have had a major boardroom reshuffle heading into the new season, with Ross Wilson joining Stewart Robertson, Douglas Park and Craig Mullholland in leaving Ibrox.
