Rangers U18s succumbed to defeat at the hands of Partick Thistle at Lochinch on Friday night [Thistle Weir Youth Academy Twitter], just a matter of days after beating the same opposition.

Goals from Arron Lyall and Ross McCausland handed the hosts a victory at the Rangers Football Centre on Tuesday evening.

However, the Jags exacted swift revenge on Friday by winning the rematch 2-0.

The club provided no information via official channels and with the games taking place behind closed doors, there’s been little in the way of information on team lineups since the return of Academy fixtures.

Yet, the fact that Northern Ireland youth international, Ross McCausland, played and scored for the Rangers B team earlier on Friday, suggests that the Gers side was at least partially weakened for this fixture.

Dean Watson scored both goals for Thistle on the night, capitalising on two Rangers errors.

For the first, Watson caught a Rangers defender in possession before going through and smashing the ball into the bottom right corner.

His second goal, which came in the same half, was also a piece of opportunism, with the young attacker chipping a finish into the open net from the edge of the area after the Gers keeper failed to collect a long ball cleanly.

It’s a disappointing result for the U18s, but at this stage, after so many months without matches, the players can certainly be forgiven for showing signs of rustiness.

The next few weeks will be mainly about getting up to speed and ironing out any glaring weaknesses with a view to upping performance levels later in the season.
