Football fans often romanticise about returns for former players but not many Rangers supporters would have had ‘Nikola Katic rumour’ on their January transfer window bingo cards.

The former Gers centre-back is now with FC Zurich in Switzerland and his name appeared on the radar for this month when Craig Moore highlighted Katic as the right profile of player amid the defensive injury crisis.

Moore works as an agent and told how the 28-year-old’s name ‘crossed his desk’ as one that would be available.

It was then claimed Katic wanted a Rangers return and had made it his priority for this month as he looked to leave Zurich.

However, his representatives admitted they were already in talks with other clubs, including at least one in England.

The story swirled and as it moved on it was also claimed that Gers had in fact made contact with their former player over a sensational return.

It certainly looks as if he could be on his way out of Switzerland but his club have been told to stand firm over their price.

Zurich told to demand good price for Nikola Katic

Ex-Switzerland international turned pundit Pascal Zuberbühler does not want to see the Swiss club bullied into selling their player on the cheap to Rangers or any other club.

As much as Katic may want out and a dream return to Ibrox could be looked upon as a perfect solution, he points out the selling club hold the aces and should stand firm for what they want.

He told Blue Sport: “Katic is on the payroll at FC Zurich. Do they have a firm offer?

“The player belongs to FC Zurich. As a sporting director or president, I want to see from a club that we want Mirlind Kryeziu, we want Nikola Katic – for this and this price.”

Rangers target Katic wants Zurich exit

Some Scottish media has picked up on a report from Swiss outlet Watson stating Katic has had an offer from Rangers.

However, all their report says is “Katic is said to have received an offer from his former club Glasgow Rangers”, so it seems as if they may be referring to the earlier reports about an approach.

And the Daily Record have said the player’s representatives are not aware of any offer from Ibrox.

But Watson do talk about how the Bosnia international does want a move along with Mirlind Kryeziu and that the club must find a solution.

Zurich sporting director Milos Malenovic has already admitted he is resigned to letting Katic move on from his club.

“I think that is completely understandable. It is true that we are not the final destination for many players in Switzerland,” a frustrated Malenovic said.

“I think that is also logical. We promised him (Katic) in the summer that he would have a chance of moving in the winter rather than in the summer.”

Zurich manager Ricardo Moniz has since hinted that Katic is waiting for something in particular, telling Reprezentacija: “He is very picky. He has one drawback, his time is running out, and he doesn’t train.”
