When £8m striker deal went sour and saw Rangers under fire

The Scottish record transfer fee is one that will probably stand for a long time, Rangers certainly won’t be paying what they did for Tore Andre Flo anytime soon.

The £12m that Chelsea are said to have received from the Light Blues is still some £3m more than Celtic have ever committed for a player and are also unlikely to beat in the coming transfer windows.

Then Rangers chairman Sir David Murray may have over paid for Tore Andre Flo, however, as his counterpart at Sunderland Sir Bob Murray claimed, as reported by The Sun, not as much as they did.

Rangers get most out of Tore Andre Flo deal

The problem with his spell at Rangers was that Tore Andre Flo was always going to get compared to Henrik Larsson.

A goal ratio of one every two games is the sort of return that Cyriel Dessers or Sam Lammers would kill for now.

That he arrived with a rate of one every three games suggests that he performed, at least, as well as could be expected.

Flo also chipped in with plenty of assists too though.

Recalling paying Rangers £8m for the Norwegian international, Sir Bob told of his conversation with Sir David:

“I phoned my friend David Murray who I have known for a long time at Rangers, he sold me him.

“I rang him up and said: ‘How dare you sell me that plank for £8million.’

“And he said, ‘Bob, I paid £13million for him.’

“Obviously, it was a bad season.”

With just four goals, Flo was nowhere near as productive for Sunderland and the Norway international never returned to the form he showed at Rangers or previously at Chelsea.

If Rangers had paid a fee in the region of £5m or £6m even, Flo would be remembered more fondly.

That he never won the league and cost more than Michael Mols, Ronald de Boer and Shota Arveladze together doesn’t do him any favours though.
