What ever happened to 24-cap international who trialled with Rangers?

Rangers were very busy during the January transfer window, with players coming and going from Ibrox with regularity.
However, a hint of mystery remains around one player who looked set to become a Ger.

The 24-cap New Zealand international was confirmed by Steven Gerrard as trialling with the club, towards the back end of the month.
Having most recently played in the MLS for Vancouver Whitecaps, he was a free agent and looking for a new club.

Still relatively young for a keeper, at 27, he had spent most of his playing career in Germany, before moving to the States.
At club level, his pedigree isn’t great. Yet, he is an established international and at 6ft 3′, he looked like he would offer a big physical presence.
When he was spotted at Ibrox watching an SPL match, a deal looked close.

However, curiously, the club went out and got someone else.

22-year-old Andy Firth from Barrow AFC.
Even on it’s own, that seemed a strange move.
After all, Firth only has senior experience in National League football.

No new is bad news for Marinovic

While that signing didn’t seem to augur well for Marinovic, there was no announcement that his trial had ended.
In fact, there still hasn’t been any confirmation that he didn’t make the grade.
A month on, it’s fair to say at this stage that he won’t be becoming Ger.
One thing is for sure though, the whole goalkeeping scenario was handled bizarrely.
Why bring an international in on trial if you plan on raiding the English fifth tier in the same week?

With two already on the books and one out on loan, the board were never going to sanction a double keeper swoop last month.
Marinovic was the one to miss out and for now, it seems his search for a new club continues.
