Three Premier League defenders Rangers could target on Bosman’s after pre-contract link

One of Rangers’ biggest problems this season has been the protection afforded to whoever had to line up between the sticks.

Jack Butland’s crisis of confidence didn’t help but Liam Kelly can be proud of his efforts after achieving a lifelong dream.

The goals against column doesn’t make for pretty reading, especially after Barry Ferguson took charge at Ibrox.

Titles are built on a solid defence, and Rangers need to rebuild theirs.

As with goalkeeper, there are several options available who are leaving Premier League clubs and available on free transfers.

Rangers can plug defence with Premier League Bosman move

Rangers have already been linked with Cameron Burgess who is leaving Ipswich Town.

The 6ft 4inch tall centre-half would bring the physicality needed to bolster the rearguard and be first-team ready.

A similar profile of player would be Michael Keane, someone who Kevin Thelwell was probably involved in dealing with in terms of contract negotiations.

The former England cap has lost his place in the Everton starting XI but, at 32, still has a lot to offer given the position that he plays.

A good all-rounder, Keane is comfortable on the ball, physical and a natural leader.

If Rangers can sell Robin Propper, he would be the ideal replacement.

Tariq Lamptey, at only 24, has been released by Brighton and would be a similar coup to when Dujon Sterling signed for Rangers.

He has elite level attributes and would be a natural to step into James Tavernier’s shoes.

Since 2020/21, the Ghana international has missed 100 games through injury.

Also a right-back, Kyle Walker-Peters is leaving Southampton after their relegation to the Championship and on the lookout for a new club.

On paper, he is exactly the sort of signing that Steven Gerrard would have made.

A natural athlete, the England cap is attack-minded and would thrive in a team that dominates possession.

At 28-years old, he might fancy a change of scenery in terms of playing for a big club, competing for trophies and playing in Europe.

There are other names, like Axel Tuanzebe and Victor Lindelof, both have solid reputations, however, Scottish football has shown it pays little attention to who a player used to play for and how many caps they have.
