Steven Gerrard ‘loved’ Jordan Henderson eyes return home, perfect fit for Rangers ‘possibility’

Rangers saw the transfer window shut frustrated that they were still light in positions where Philippe Clement had identified the need to strengthen.

The manager specifically spoke about the ‘”possibility” of addressing the number six position, an issue that nobody in the Ibrox hot seat has taken seriously despite it’s importance in the team.

Steven Davis should have been able to mentor his replacement, instead, he retired through injury with no replacement in sight and John Lundstram shoehorned into the role.

Why Jordan Henderson would be perfect fit for Rangers

With so many young players in the squad, Clement could do with a wise old head in the middle of the park, someone with elite level experience and real leadership qualities.

Joan Jordan was targeted, but why not Jordan Henderson instead?

Someone who knows the former England captain better than most is Steven Gerrard.

Rangers title winning manager, now in Saudi Arabia, took Henderson with him as he looked to build a team at Al Ettifaq, only to lose the 34-year old less than a year later.

A decision that Gerrard clearly wasn’t too happy about, as told to The Telegraph:

“I respected his decision because I love him as a guy, I love him as a player and I have nothing but ultimate respect for him. I was disappointed. Any manager who loses his captain during the season is not ideal and I told Jordan that. But if someone is not settled.

“If someone has some family things that are affecting him. If someone has got different outside goals or opportunities, like England for example, then I have to respect that and understand it. And I do. But was I disappointed? Of course, I was.”

Henderson could be in line for return home

A change of manager at Ajax has seen Henderson’s influence diminish and it is reported that a return to Blighty could be on the cards.

According to Talksport, Championship and Premier League clubs are considering the Liverpool great which raises the question, why shouldn’t Rangers join the queue too?

Henderson need only speak to Gerrard to get an understanding of how big a club Rangers is.

it is also the sort of move that, if Gerrard was still manager, that you wouldn’t be surprised to see come off.

Philippe Clement might not have the same pull on a personal level but if Henderson is looking to prolong his career at the top level, play in Europe and compete for trophies, Rangers – on paper – would be as good a proposition as any.

If he can sort out his tax issues to return to the UK that is.
