Steven Gerrard Joe Aribo comments could come back to haunt Rangers

Rangers midfielder Joe Aribo continues to impress and the comments of former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard make interesting reading against his current form.

Stevie G was amongst Joe’s biggest fans and was the one who brought the now Nigerian international to Ibrox back in 2019, breaking the heart of Charlton boss Lee Bowyer.

Since then Joe has gone on to have some big moments in the blue of Rangers but this season there is a clear and evident development in his game from technical talent to match-winning performer.

There’s an added responsibility to Joe Aribo’s game and the player continues to impress by the match under Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Steven Gerrard and Aston Villa are yet to be linked in any meaningful way but the comments of the ex-Gers gaffer whilst manager could act as a warning for Rangers fans.

Speaking after the midfielder impressed in the Gers’ 2-0 win over Brondby – the same night as that infamous “do I look happy?” interview – Gerrard suggested Rangers would be “lucky” to keep hold of the Nigerian international.

“Listen, he’s a great kid. He wants to learn, he wants to grow,” said Gerrard [BT Sport].

“What I’ve said to Joe is, ‘you are a much better player when you play angry in a nice way. Flex your muscles, you are six foot three, you are a big strong lad, go and put yourself about’.

“And when he does, he is a joy to watch. I thought his first 45 minute performance today was outstanding.

“That’s probably the reason why he tired a little bit. But he’s played a lot, he’s been on international duty.

“But if he can find that type of performance consistently over 90 minutes, we’ll be lucky to keep hold of him.”

It’s a performance Joe Aribo is certainly beginning to find more consistently and with 18 months remaining on his current deal, Rangers fans may well enjoy him whilst he’s strutting his stuff at Ibrox.

Rangers star Joe Aribo has made 118 appearances for Rangers to date, netting 22 goals and laying on 19 assists.

Ibrox supporters have also been leaping to the defence of the midfielder as an outspoken pundit makes a major claim regarding a Celtic counterpart.
