Shades of Claudio Caniggia as Gers linked to Premiership goal machine

There are some doubts about potential Rangers interest in Motherwell striker Kevin van Veen but the Dutch forward could be the Ibrox club’s modern answer to Claudio Caniggia.

Whilst the ex-Northampton and Scunthorpe forward hasn’t quite had anywhere near the legendary career of 50-cap former Argentine attacker El Pájaro, the player’s situation shares a distinct similarity.

Claudio Caniggia came to Scotland in the twilight of his career, rather dramatically joining Dundee in the year 2000 after a stuttering stint with Atalanta.

After an explosive first season, he was eventually signed by Rangers and the rest is history as the Argentina forward went on to win a cup double in his first campaign and a treble in his second.

Despite being in the final rungs of his career, Claudio Caniggia was a fantastic player for Rangers and Kevin van Veen could be the same as the Ibrox club look to reenergise a stuttering attack.

Kevin van Veen can be like Claudio Caniggia for Rangers

Kevin Van Veen might be 32-years-old and he might never have played at the level of Rangers, but hauling Motherwell away from relegation almost single-handedly has earned him cult status at Fir Park.

At the weekend, Van Veen showed a touch and poise Claudio Caniggia would’ve been proud of himself to pluck the ball out of the sky and score the only goal in the Steelmen’s 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.

It was a moment which showed the immense class and prowess of the forward, who in netting his 25th goal of the season certainly had some of the naysayers in the Rangers camp rethinking their approach.

Available on a free and likely on low wages, the Dutchman has already proven he can take care of the Premiership jobbers and even scored at Celtic Park in a recent 1-1 draw.

Linked to Rangers by comments from ex-Motherwell manager Graeme Alexander, there is nothing official to suggest that the Ibrox club are interested.

But after taking a punt on Claudio Caniggia from Dundee, having Kevin van Veen in the Rangers squad could be a difference maker as the club looks to haul back the difference in the domestic game.
