Rangers will be looking to sign a new striker in the summer and Motherwell’s Kevin van Veen is the man for the job.

This is according to his former Fir Park gaffer Graham Alexander who knows only too well the qualities of the big Dutchman.

Alfredo Morelos is tipped to exit Ibrox and Michael Beale needs more depth than Antonio Colak and Kemar Roofe.

A proven SPFL forward like Van Veen or Rangers-linked Kevin Nisbet makes sense and the former has 23 goals to his name this season for a team that is hardly prolific.

Why should Rangers look to sign Kevin van Veen?

Speaking to The Daily Record, Alexander has explained exactly what the 6ft 2inch striker would bring to Beale’s forward line:

“I just assumed that, having seen first-hand what he’s capable of doing, the biggest clubs in Scotland would be interested in signing him last summer.

“My belief is that he could do a job for Celtic or Rangers.

“Kevin is a throwback. I’ve always bristled when I hear players described as mavericks, because football is a team game, but that’s exactly what big Kev is.

“He does his own thing, and what he does, very few other players can do.

“The other players know they have a chance if they can just get the ball to him.”

With nearly a goal every two games in Scotland, there is no doubting that Van Veen knows where the goals are but there is one major issue.

By the time the transfer window opens, he will be 32-years old.

Hardly the sort of progressive signing that Michael Beale has suggested for Rangers’ transfer plans as as enthusiasm builds ahead of the summer.

Van Veen might be useful in the sort of role that Billy Dodds or Steven Thompson performed for Rangers in years gone by as one of four strikers but the priority has to be a new first-choice and he definitely isn’t that.
