Ross Wilson has outlined the key qualities that new signing James Sands will offer Rangers [].

After several days of intense speculation, the Gers announced the capture of Sands on an 18-month loan from New York City FC with an exclusive option to buy on Wednesday evening.

Sands can play centre-back, right-back or in midfield and he’s been capped seven times at senior international level by the United States.

He moves to Rangers after helping NYCFC to the MLS Cup, playing the full 120 minutes of the final against Portland Timbers last month.

He’s highly thought of in the States but few Rangers fans will have seen him in action.

Therefore, Wilson has taken the opportunity to outline some of his key attributes.

“Gio has looked closely at what he can bring to Rangers and I know working with the manager and our staff, James will develop his game further here,” he said [].

“Aside from his qualities with the ball, his versatility and tactical understanding, we also know that James is a brilliant character, positive personality and despite his young age, is already showing impressive leadership qualities.

“Naturally we faced competition from some excellent European clubs to sign James. I am delighted that he shares our belief that Rangers is the next step in his exciting journey.”

Exciting first January signing for Rangers

Rangers’ most recent signing from the MLS prior to Sands’ arrival, Matt Polster, didn’t manage to hit the heights some thought he would.

However, the Gers have a long tradition of bringing in USA internationals and several of them, including Claudio Reyna and Maurice Edu, proved to be excellent signings.

Sands will hope that he’ll make a similarly big impression upon the Ibrox faithful over the next 18 months and if he does, the club are sure to take up their exclusive option to buy.

The 21-year-old will now have around two weeks to settle in before competitive action resumes with a trip to Aberdeen on 18th January.

Meanwhile, a former Rangers player could reportedly make a current Ibrox starlet his first January signing.
