Ronnie Edwards: Posh reject three “Mickey Mouse” bids for Rangers-linked defender

Peterborough director Barry Fry has fumed at three rejected “Mickey Mouse” bids for Rangers-linked defender Ronnie Edwards.

Rangers were one of three clubs named as potential suitors for Edwards – who is the England U20s captain – in the summer transfer window.

But with League One Peterborough demanding big money for the centre-back, it was Premier League West Ham and not the Ibrox side who were more strongly linked.

However, a move failed to materialise and now Barry Fry has been discussing the situation of Ronnie Edwards as Peterborough receive early interest in the January window.

Barry Fry on Peterborough Ronnie Edwards stance

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Barry Fry claims that there have been three bids for Ronnie Edwards so far in this window.

The 20-year-old centre-back has been an ever-present for the Posh in League One this season and Fry also claims that as many as 12 Premier League clubs have displayed an interest.

Interestingly, the report also gives some information regarding why Peterborough are demanding top dollar for the defender, who is contracted to the club until 2025.

Crystal Palace are the side most recently mentioned alongside Edwards, with the Telegraph report claiming the London club were quoted £15m two seasons ago.

Whilst Fry didn’t name the defender’s current price, nor the side involved in negotiations, he did explain that “the clubs are some way apart on the fee, the payment schedule, the sell on percentage and the add ons”.

Peterborough are also being a little hamstrung by the fact that Barnet – the club from whom Ronnie Edwards joined the Posh – are due 50% of any fee the League One side generate.

The comments come after Peterborough CEO Darragh MacAnthony admitted the player would likely be sold in this window.

Rangers not linked to defender transfer

Whilst there is no mention of Rangers, those Gers links remain fresh in the mind from the summer with the BBC the organisation who initially linked Michael Beale to a move.

Now under the management of Philippe Clement it remains unclear if Rangers are interested in a switch although it is clear that unless Ronnie Edwards is allowed to run down his Peterborough contract a move looks unlikely.

The suggestion that Rangers would sanction such a sizeable transfer fee – which is below £10m but not by much by the Telegraph’s account – is a very bold one.

Rangers’ transfer attentions also appear to be focused elsewhere in the window, with left-back, midfield, and the frontline seemingly more pressing areas of concern in the squad.
