Peterborough United have opened the door for Rangers to renew their interest in Ronnie Edwards with the League One club’s chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirming that the defender ‘will be sold’ for the ‘right offer’.

What the ‘right offer’ looks like to Peterborough United, however, is anyone’s guess.

It is not so long since Ronnie Edwards, an England U21 international, was being talked about as a £15 million talent amid interest from Premier League giants Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.

But with his contract expiring in around 18 months’ time, Edwards’ price-tag may now have dipped enough to have Rangers emerging as a genuine candidate for his signature. BBC Sport claimed back in August that there is interest in the towering centre-half from Ibrox, and MacAnthony will not stand in Edwards’ way if Rangers stump up the sort of bid Posh deem acceptable

“Ronnie and Jonno (striker Jonson Clarke-Harris) will be sold if the right offers come in,” MacAnthony tells Peterborough Live.

“We have plans for Ronnie leaving.

“We don’t want players to leave at the end of the window because we want to have our replacements in. In an ideal scenario, any departures would happen in the first 10 days of January so we know where we are and we can settle down.

“We are always vulnerable when we are in League One or in the bottom half of the Championship. But we can’t let ourselves get down. We just have to get on with things.

“It would take an extraordinary offer for us to lose anyone else though.”

Defenders linked with Ibrox switch

Rangers do appear to be prioritising a new central defender ahead of the January window. Nathaniel Adjei of Hammarby has been scouted by the Glasgow giants. Rangers, who stunned Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday night, could make a move for Everton misfit Holgate

The Southampton loanee was linked with Philippe Clement’s Monaco side two years ago.

Ahmed Hegazi, now plying his trade in Saudi Arabia, is another potential option.
