Fabrizio Romano has tweeted about Man United’s plans for Amad Diallo, who is currently on loan at Rangers.
Much to the delight of many Bears, Diallo joined the Gers on 27 January on a deal until the end of the season.
He scored just five minutes into his debut in a Premiership fixture at Ross County, but struggled in his second appearance for the club against Celtic a few days later.
The 19-year-old speedster came off the bench late on in the 5-0 win over Hearts last weekend and then was an unused substitute for the 2-0 win over Hibs in midweek.
When Diallo joined on loan, there was no mention by either club of an option to buy.
Romano drops update on Man United loanee
That’s hardly surprising, given that United reportedly paid an initial €25m (£21m) [Sky Sport] to sign him from Atalanta in October 2020.
He’s under contract at Old Trafford until 2025 and he’s one of the most highly-rated young wide players in Europe right now.
But just in case some Bears were wondering what the chances were of Rangers signing Diallo on a permanent deal in the summer, transfer guru Romano has provided an update on United’s stance.
‘Manchester United have not changed their original plan on Amad Diallo,’ he wrote.
‘He’s part of future project, Rangnick was also happy with his potential – Rangers loan considered the best option before coming back in June.’
Diallo could help Rangers to silverware
While this update isn’t surprising, it should focus the minds of fans towards rallying behind Diallo for the short period he’s with the club.
He hasn’t got off to the most spectacular of starts, with his early goal at Ross County perhaps unfairly raising expectations.
But it’s clear that the Ivory Coast international has bags of pace and a lot of skill, so if he’s used at the right times, he could cause havoc.
Rangers are still competing on three fronts and an in-form Diallo could be a difference-maker in the Premiership run-in and in the Scottish Cup.
His third Gers start is likely to come in the cup on Saturday against Annan Athletic at Galabank and a full game against lower-league opposition could help restore his confidence and get him ready for bigger challenges ahead.
Meanwhile, a former Rangers player bagged a brace as he continues to excel overseas.
