Rodgers reunion folly for once-linked Rangers target Daniel Amartey

Brendan Rodgers first signing for Celtic could be a player that Rangers have ruled out as not being good enough in Daniel Amartey.

Last summer, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was linked with a move for the experienced 48-cap Ghana international, however, he stayed at Leicester City and was a regular for the relegated side.

Out of contract, the versatile defender has been linked by TEAMtalk to reunite with Brendan Rodgers but moving to Celtic would only be good news for Rangers should Daniel Amartey follow him to Parkhead.

Ange Postecoglu has built a unit, a team that knows exactly what it is doing and how to get it done.

On paper, Amartey looks like good business, last season it would have been for us, but he has been awful this season.

An average score on SofaScore of 6.93 is only just higher than Leon King’s 6.89 and perfectly demonstrates just how poor he has been.

Celtic, without Cameron Carter-Vickers, don’t look anywhere near as solid and Amartey would be a similar style of player to Carl Starfelt.

One that needs a more dominant partner, probably one of the reasons why Rangers didn’t sign Daniel Amartey last season.

Brendan Rodgers will be handed a lot of money to spend, he wouldn’t have taken the job otherwise, but he has inherited a successful, treble winning squad.

It doesn’t need a lot of money spent on it.

Signing players like Amartey and picking them over key players from last season could see dressing room unrest and a breakdown of the spirit that has been so key for them.

Is Amartey an upgrade on what they have already? No.

Would he get a game for Rangers? No.

If this is a sign of things to come, Michael Beale and Rangers should be encouraged ahead of a season where they should already have nothing to fear.
