Rangers fans eager to see Colombian striker Rafael Santos Borre turn out at Ibrox next season may well be disappointed to hear the latest from River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo.

The Argentine coach is a huge admirer of the Los Cafeteros striker and has openly pleaded with the Millonarios hierarchy to tie the striker down with his contract set to expire.

Rafael Santos Borre has netted 56 goals in 146 games for River Plate and is one of the Argentine giant’s most influential players.

The situation is complicated by the nature of Santos Borre’s contract, with Atletico Madrid due a reported £3m (€3.5m) should the player sign a new deal before the expiration of his current one.

The suggestion is that due to this, Borre’s representation are holding out for a substantial contract offer from River Plate as by holding off until July, the Colombian will save River a small fortune.

Italian journalist Nicola Schira was claiming Borre wants around £40k a week with a £4.2m signing on fee.

Rangers were linked to the player by Football Insider who claimed there was “concrete interest” in bringing Borre to Glasgow amid conjecture regarding his future.

However, it appears now that Marcelo Gallardo has confirmed that a decision has been made regarding Borre – and it looks like he’ll stay at River Plate.

As quoted by Argentine journalist Seba Ongarelli, Gallardo has allegedly claimed that “we will enjoy him a bit more” with regards Santos Borre.

This backs up claims from leading River Plate fan site River, el mas grande that the player is set to sign the player down.

That site believes “the plan” is to tie Santos Borre down on a substantial contract whilst keeping the money potentially owed to Atletico Madrid.

So whilst there was some outside hope that this exciting link could potentially join the ranks at Ibrox, it appears to have been short-lived.

Rafael Santos Borre may well have been lined up as a replacement for a leading Rangers star – but now some reported are suggesting he wants to stay at Ibrox.
