Reported Rangers target Abdallah Sima has a history of dumping incoming Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers from the manager’s time in charge of Leicester City.
Reports this week have emerged claiming that Rangers are closing in on a loan deal for the 22-year-old Senegal forward, who joined Brighton in a £7m deal in the summer of 2021.
But before the Abdallah Sima switch to the English south coast, the big striker is someone Rangers are very familiar with from his time at Slavia Prague.
The forward stole the show in that controversial Europa League quarter final defeat in February 2021 and it’s from his time in the Czech Republic that Brendan Rodgers probably still has nightmares about him.
Abdallah Sima once downed Leicester City
With Leicester City one of the favourites for the Europa League that season, Abdallah Sima inspired a stunning a 2-0 victory for Slavia in the second-leg of their Round of 16 clash in England.
The game was neatly poised at 0-0 from the first leg and with Leicester expected to progress, Abdallah Sima netted a stunning strike from long-range to make it 2-0 in the game after Lucas Provod had given the Czechs the lead.
With that goal, the big striker left Brendan Rodgers devastated yet again in European with the rapidly unfurling Foxes, who were eventually all-but relegated on the ex-Liverpool manager’s watch.
Whilst the now-Championship club enjoyed a run to the Europa Conference League semi-finals the following season, the defeat to Slavia Prague remains a black-mark on Brendan Rodgers’ copybook and Abdallah Sima was the man to deliver it to the former Leicester City boss.
It’s a good omen for Rangers fans heading into the new season with Sima potentially set to come up against Brendan Rodgers again following his move to Celtic.
Rangers fans will be hoping to see more of the Abdallah Sima who downed Leicester and was once valued at £50m as the club continues to bolster its frontline ahead of the new campaign.
