Reported £40m pressure builds on Rangers star despite GVB latest

Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos is ahead of schedule in his return from injury, but it could still be too soon to help relieve the Champions League pressure on Antonio Colak.

The Croatian striker has featured heavily in pre-season amid injuries to both Colombian firebrand Alfie and back-up striker Kemar Roofe.

Speaking after the 3-1 friendly win over West Ham, Giovanni van Bronckhorst claims there are hopes Alfredo Morelos will be available for selection in the coming weeks.

However, the news on injury-plagued Kemar Roofe – who Four Lads Had a Dream have previously claimed is out until September – remains much the same.

The Dutch coach has also spoken about needing to manager Antonio Colak whilst Morelos and Roofe remain sidelined.

“I had to (sub Antonio) because he has played almost every game and we have the game ahead against Tottenham,” said van Bronckhorst [Rangers Review].

“Today we made some changes to make sure some of the players are not overworked and give some other players the minutes they need.

“Colak is of course our only natural striker at the moment and hopefully we get Morelos back in the coming weeks, I think he will be back quicker than Kemar.

“Last season I had no fit striker, at least I have one now, but hopefully the other two will join Antonio soon to be available for selection.”

Rangers Champions League hopes on Antonio Colak shoulders

Whilst Antonio Colak has looked tireless up front so far for Rangers, the new signing from PAOK is without that first goal and there are already some predictable grumbles amongst the support.

Until that goes in they’ll continue and the pressure is building ahead of those Champions League qualifiers and the £40m prize of group stage qualification.

It’s still pre-season so there is plenty of time but Rangers certainly look light in the striker position at present with the tie against Belgian side Union Saint Gilloise looming large.

Perhaps Alfredo Morelos can be back in the squad for a potential Champions League play-off tie, but with only Antonio Colak available in attack it’s little wonder there are some nerves in the support.

There is of course a responsibility across the team to contribute, but everyone knows that a striker’s main job is to score the goals and at present Rangers’ hopes are pinned on Antonio Colak.

Meanwhile, a controversial former Ibrox star has been lamenting comments he made when he first joined the Gers from a Premiership rival.
