A Scottish Sun report has provided an update after Rangers were linked with a transfer swoop for PSG wonderkid Xavi Simons, and it isn’t good news for Bears.
AS Diario claimed earlier this week that Rangers were hoping to land Simons in the January window.
It was suggested that the presence of Giovanni van Bronckhorst might help to convince the starlet and his agent, Mino Raiola, that a move to Ibrox would be a good idea.
The 18-year-old attacking midfielder has already made his PSG first-team debut, while he’s scored twice and notched five assists for their U20s in the UEFA Youth League this season.
The report got plenty of Rangers fans very excited, but an update provided by the Scottish Sun on Thursday afternoon makes for less encouraging reading.
They claim that although Simons is set to be on the move in January, contrary to AS Diario’s claim, the Gers aren’t one of the clubs competing to land him.
It’s reiterated that his former club Barcelona are interested in bringing him back to the Camp Nou but no other club names are put forward.
Report claims Rangers aren’t in race for PSG wonderkid
It did seem a little too good to be true that Rangers had a shot at signing a top talent from PSG.
The Gers would be able to offer European football and perhaps more first-team opportunities than some top Champions League clubs.
However, new Barça manager Xavi has already shown a willingness to field young players in his team and even though they are cash-strapped, Rangers wouldn’t realistically be able to compete if there was serious interest from Catalunya or from another European giant.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if there were a few new arrivals at Ibrox in the winter window, though, as GvB looks to put his own stamp on the current squad.
Another exciting talent who’s currently contracted to a Premier League club is reportedly on the Gers’ radar.
