Reported Rangers target Joey Veerman has dropped an intriguing update on his current situation, making it clear that he wants to leave Heerenveen.

Rangers have been linked with Veerman, who is contracted to the Eredivisie club until 2024, for some time.

Serie A outfit Hellas Verona have reportedly already seen a bid of around £5m rejected [Scottish Sun], while on Friday, the Glasgow Times reported that the Light Blues could be prepared to splash up to £7m on the 22-year-old.

Meanwhile, Heerenveen’s technical director Ferry de Haan recently confirmed that a bid had been submitted from an unnamed club that was under consideration [Glasgow Live].

“I think the Italians made a very reasonable offer, but when I hear what Heerenveen are asking, it becomes a very difficult story,” said Veerman [Scottish Sun]. “10-12 million euros is crazy.”

“The club say, ‘You still have a contract for three years. If it doesn’t work out this year, we’re going to enjoy you for another year and ask again next season’.

“I’m very sorry about that because I’m ready for something else now. I’m having a good time in Heerenveen and I’m playing well, but I’m ready for a new challenge.

“There are several interested clubs that I am very positive about and Verona is one of them.”

Even now, it’s relatively rare to see a player speak so openly about his desire to leave a club at which he has a long-term contract.

Veerman clearly thinks he would be better off elsewhere, though, and plenty of Bears hope his next destination is Ibrox.

Verona are the only club mentioned by name here and clearly, that’s an option that appeals to the Dutchman. Yet, given Heerenveen’s current stance and the reference again here to multi-club interest, this transfer saga looks to be far from over.

Steven Gerrard has already strengthened in midfield this summer by bringing in John Lundstram, but with question marks over when Ryan Jack will be fully fit following surgery and a possible heart problem putting Nnamdi Ofobroh’s Rangers career on hold, there’s certainly room for another high-quality addition.

A current Rangers midfielder could reportedly leave the club this summer, with an unnamed Premier League side allegedly holding ‘concrete interest’ in him.
